Story maps for farm parks and attractions
A trail sheet costs you a reprint every time something changes, and ends up in the bin at the gate. The same trail on a phone costs nothing to change, and we can tell you how many people opened it.
Families scan a code at the entrance and the trail opens on a phone. There is no app and no sign-up. Each stop opens its own story when they actually reach it, so the trail works without a printed sheet, and your staff add, move and rewrite stops themselves through a web portal. We can also tell you how many people opened it, which a paper trail cannot.
What a paper trail costs you
Three things, and the first is the obvious one: every change is a reprint. A new lambing shed, a closed path, a stop that did not work with the under-fives. On paper each of those is a print run and a decision about how many to order. On the map it is five minutes and no decision at all.
The second is that you never learn anything. Trail sheets go out of the door and that is the end of it, so a trail that nobody finishes looks exactly like a trail that everybody loves. We count how many people opened it, and can tell you over a season whether that number is going up.
The third only matters if you have watched it happen. A sheet gives the whole trail away at once, so children read the last stop in the first field and the walk is over before it starts. A map that opens each stop when they arrive keeps the next one worth getting to.
How it compares with what you have now
| Option | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| A printed trail sheet | Children can hold it, tick it, take it home | Reprint for every change; single-use; litter |
| Numbered posts with signs | Durable, no phone needed | A sign costs more to change than a page does, and says the same thing all year |
| A trail leaflet in the guidebook | Already in the visitor's hand | Static, and nobody reads a guidebook while chasing a four-year-old |
| An attraction app | Everything in one place | Nobody downloads an app for a single visit, and you carry the build cost |
| A Bramble story map | Change it in minutes, visitor numbers on request, one QR code at the gate | Needs a phone, so keep a small paper stack for families who would rather not |
Questions
Do families need to download an app?
No. It opens in the browser from a QR code. That is deliberate: almost nobody downloads an app for one visit, which is why attraction apps so often go unused.
Can we run a seasonal trail and then change it?
Yes, and that is the strongest reason to use a map rather than a printed sheet. A Halloween trail can become an Easter trail without a print run.
Can we see how many people used it?
Not in the portal yet, but we measure it. Ask and we will send you the figures for your map, so you can compare a wet Tuesday with a bank holiday.
What if a family has no phone or no data?
Keep a small stack of printed sheets for them. The map is meant to replace the reprint cost, not the option.
Is it suitable for children to use themselves?
The map is a normal web page and works on a parent's phone. The stops open by location, so a child leading the way is doing the same thing as with a paper trail.
What it costs
Start with your print bill, because that is the number this has to beat. Count the trail sheets you ordered last year, every run of them, and add what it cost to change the numbered posts. Set that against £1,500 a year, or £150 a month, plus VAT, for one published trail that you change yourself as often as you like. We expect it to come out ahead for a site that changes its trail more than once a year, but it is your print bill, not ours, and the sum is yours to do. Count in the small paper stack you will still keep for the families who would rather have one, because print does not go to nothing.
What the bill does not show is the decisions. Every paper reprint is a choice about how many to order and whether the change is worth a run. On the map a closed path is fixed in five minutes and there is no quantity. Halloween, Easter and half-term become edits.
If you already have a trail sheet, most of the writing is done and the job is typing it in. What that actually involves. If you would rather we did it, that is the done-for-you build: from £5,000 plus VAT and about £4,500 a year, and it has no guarantee.
The self-managed subscription begins with thirty days free at portal.bramblemaps.com/start: no card, about a minute, and live from the moment you make it. There are no example stops to delete first; every stop on the trail is one you typed. Aim it at a half-term week and watch the gate; phones out at the entrance is the thing to look for. Do nothing at the end of the month and the trail goes quiet, with every stop kept and an email from us before it does. Print the code on a laminated sign for the trial rather than on the season's leaflet, because an unpaid trial does not keep its web address. If you subscribe and it is not for you, tell us within thirty days of the first payment and it is refunded. That guarantee covers the self-managed subscription only; a done-for-you build is quoted and agreed first and is not covered. Full pricing.
Walk a trail before you build one
Thornfield is a demonstration map of an estate we invented. The mechanics are the same as a farm trail's.
